Page refreshed on September 5, 2004, Version 3.0
If you are interested in expanding your spell checker vocabulary, you have come to the right place! Below you will find a link allowing you to download a file that contains a long list of medical terms to supplement your current spell check dictionary. It currently includes words used in the ICD-9, DRG, and the DSM-IV diagnoses codes. This supplemental dictionary is an ascii text document native to Microsoft Word. If you are using a different word processor, you may be able to convert this file to be an available dictionary on your system.
This update will continue to grow, so check back now and then to get the most updated version.
If you find this spelling dictionary to be an asset to your study or clinical practice (you keep it on your system), then you are expected to remit the requested shareware fee. It costs time and money to keep this file up to date and available on the Internet. The shareware fee is $3.00 U.S. for each computer installation. You can also purchase them online with a credit card for $3.00:
Why so low of a shareware fee? Because we feel that you will easily get this much value from MedTerms, and that you will want to support a project that is so reasonably priced.
We currently have several medical software applications that have been granted license to incorporate the MedTerms dictionary list into their spelling engine systems. The licensing fee will be $3.00 U.S. per computer, with the Hosford Web Service maintaining all rights to this file. Once a site has been registered, future updates are free.
Email me if you have any questions about the Hosford Medical Terms Dictionary or the shareware fee.
We have included a convenient registration form (Register.txt) that will allow you to easily send in your shareware fee. Email me at email@example.com if you have any questions about the Hosford Medical Terms Dictionary or the shareware fee. Thank you for your financial support, and happy spelling.

Note on adding more words to this list:
Do not add words to this medterms.dic dictionary, rather add new words to your own custom dictionary. This supplemental dictionary has grown so large that adding new words to it may cause your system to error, turning MedTerms.dic into a corrupted jumble of letters.
In MS Word's spell check when you add new custom words, there is a
selection box that will allow you to choose the custom dictionary to
which words are added. By keeping your added words in a separate file
(e.g. custom.dic), you will be able to get updates of this file,
without erasing any of your personal spelling additions. If there are
words you would like to see in future updates of MedTerms, please send
them to us. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Some customers have written, asking about an error message that the
dictionary list is too large. If this happens on your system, then you
need to split the large dictionary into two files. Do this by opening
the dictionary file in MS Word, and select-cut about half of the words
in the list. Then paste these words into a new file. Save this new file
as medterms2.dic, and then install both of these files as dictionaries
on your system (see instructions below).
Following are the installation instructions. Please read them carefully. Note which version of Microsoft Word you are using, then follow the appropriate setup instructions.
