As you can see, there is something wrong with the dens. Specifically, it is displaced anteriorly approximately 8 - 10 mm. Studies of choice for working this up further would be either CT or MR. However, when this case was collected, these imaging methods were unavailable, and an older form of tomography was used. The image below was taken about 10 minutes after the lateral C-spine image shown initially.
